Suridh 'Shaz' Hassan
printed on Giclée Hahnemühle Bamboo

Under British rule from 1824 to 1948, Yangon became a significant centre of commerce located between India and Singapore. Hate them or love them, Yangon's crumbling colonial buildings are a glimpse to its shady past.
This estate looks straight out of the modernist, almost Goldfinger Brutalist style seen in some of the tower blocks and council estates across London and the UK.

In 2013 I was visiting Yangon for the 6th Yangon Photo Festival. It was a real honour meeting a range of journalists, photographers and creatives plus it was back when there was still such optimism and positivity for Burmese politician Aung San Suu Kyi - who I actually sat behind during the event!

As much as the Festival was fun, it was my first time in Yangon and it was wonderful out and about shooting both stills and video and coming across some very interesting architecture that reminded me so much of inner city London.
